Brief summary:
Explore centuries of medical history at the Mutter Museum, founded to educate future doctors about the anatomy and human medical anomalies; today it serves to educate the public about our medical past and what it means to be human. Its collection features preserved anatomical specimens, models, medical instruments, and more.
The Mutter Museum embodies the College of Physicians of Philadelphia's mission to advance the cause of health and uphold the ideals of medicine. The goal of the Museum is to explain mysteries of the human body and foster an appreciation for the history of diagnosis and treatment of disease.
The museum features everything from human skulls and other osteological specimens to wet specimens in jars, like human brains, major organs, and even some things that shouldn’t be in the body (like cysts and tumors), to models the body with exaggerated features to demonstrate important discoveries, and medical instruments, from the smallest suture needle to a massive iron lung and other inventions that have advanced the practice of medicine (and even some that were thought to be useful, but have been proven otherwise).
A visit to the Mutter Museum will leave you disturbingly informed.
