You’ll learn about 350 years of American Jewish history through many, family-friendly hands-on exhibits, including the museum’s collection of over 1,200 artifacts, 30 original films, 13 interactive displays, and more that explore universal themes, such as immigration, worship, hard work, entertainment, community, family life, and more.

The mission of the museum is to connect Jews more closely to their heritage and inspire people of all backgrounds to have a greater understanding and appreciation for the diverse American Jewish experience by providing guided dialogue about the American Jewish experience in the context of American history—so no matter your background, the National Museum of American Jewish History has a lot to offer.

  • Foundations of Freedom: 1654-1880: from the first Jewish permanent settlers in America to the great migration from Eastern Europe that began in the late 1800s, this exhibit explores what it meant to be part of the small Jewish minority in a young and still-evolving nation.
  • Dreams of Freedom: 1880-1945: explore the lives of the millions of Jewish immigrants who came to the US and shaped the Jewish community and the nation as a whole beginning with the great migration through the American Jewish experience of WWII.
  • Choices and Challenges of Freedom: 1945-Today: covering the influx of migration from war-torn Europe, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and the Soviet Union, learn about the post-WWII experience for American Jews: suburban community life, the creation of the State of Israel, Jewish civil rights, and contemporary issues the American Jewish faces today.
  • Only in America® Gallery/Hall of Fame: celebrate the lives and accomplishments of 18 individual Jewish Americans in this innovative exhibit.
  • Collections: the museum features a vast collection that illustrates the broad spectrum of American Jewish life through art, charity, childhood, civic service, religion, sports, and more through exhibits that guide the Museum’s ongoing dedication to interpretation of artifacts to inspire and educate the public.

In addition to the Museum’s regular Core Exhibits and artifact collection, the NMAJH hosts a series of traveling exhibits that further explore a variety of topics as they relate to the American Jewish experience.

  • 60-Minute, free-to-the-public “Highlights” tours are usually offered twice daily at 11:30 am and 2:30 pm. Availability is subject to change, so be sure to check at the admissions desk on the day of your visit to confirm times and availability.
